Use of Generative AI
Generative AI tools, including large language models, cannot be listed as authors, because they cannot take responsibility for the work, approve the final manuscript or be accountable for its accuracy and integrity. This is in line with the COPE position on authorship and AI tools.
Authors who use generative AI tools in preparing a manuscript must state this in the article, in the Acknowledgments or in a separate statement before the References. The statement should name the tool and describe how it was used. Use limited to correcting grammar, spelling or style does not need to be declared. Authors remain fully responsible for the content of the article. This includes the correctness of all proofs, computations and computer code, whether or not an AI tool was used to produce them, and the accuracy of all references.
Figures and images created or altered with generative AI are not permitted, unless the use of such tools is itself the subject of the research and is described in the article.
Reviewers and editors must not upload manuscripts, or any part of them, to generative AI tools, as this may breach the confidentiality of the review process. Reviewers must not use such tools to write their reports, and remain responsible for the content of any report they submit.
